Built in the late 18th century as a house for Merchants within the last existing Georgian squares in Bristol, this building has had a varied history. It was a home for the first 100 years, then it was a commercial space until it was heavily bombed during the Second World War. Since then it has homed a number of businesses, including a recording studio.
When it was bought by developers, only the external facade remained in tact but sadly none of the original Georgian features.
My role was to design highly desirable upmarket spaces to suit the 21st century. So rather than trying to replicate what was no longer there, I took the decision to transform these spaces into modern Industrial style apartments, varying from 1 – 4 bedrooms, with 1 – 3 bathrooms.
There was a nod to the past with the shaker style kitchens, but they were sprayed a deep blue, complemented by dark wooden worktops, wooden floors and brick slip walls. Each bathroom had patterned floor tiles and the whole feel of the space is bright and light, making the most of the light from the stunning Georgian windows. No expense was spared on the modern appliances and gadgets.
These apartments broke the ceiling price for Portland Square.
